Do you or someone you know require marriage or relationship counselling?

What is marriage counselling?

“Relationship counselling is the process of counselling the parties of a relationship in an effort to recognise and to better manage or reconcile troublesome differences and repeating patterns of distress. The relationship involved may be between members of a family or a couple, employees or employers in a workplace, or between a professional and a client.”

How Can I help?

Today, more and more people are seeking professional psychological assistance to get to the bottom of their relationship problems before it is too late.  Whether you are married, in a defacto relationship or in a relationship, it is never too late or too early to attend couples counselling sessions.

What is Involved?

Marriage-CounsellingMarriage counselling lies somewhere in the middle between individual counselling and mediation.  It is very important that the therapist is firm and fair on both people in the session.

The sessions are a great opportunity to have an open and honest discussion, in a supportive environment without any distractions being present.  When both parties are able to do this is, the best results are achieved.

Often there is mental health issues underlying problems in the relationship (e.g, anger management, anxiety & depression).  Mark’s approach takes these issues into consideration and deals with them.

The core of the process is effective communication between both parties. Relationship problems generally occur due  to break-downs in communication. Often people don’t know how to communicate in a relationship setting. More specifically, they don’t know how to engage in difficult conversations with each other. They don’t know how to say what they feel. As a result, needs go unmet and resentment builds over time. Which ultimately affects the relationship and the family unit as a whole.

Mark’s approach is issue based relationship counselling. He follows a 4-step process

  1. Identify what the main concerns are of both parties
  2. Identify the unerlying issues (e.g., lack of respect)
  3. Parties to communicate and explain where they are coming from on each of the different issues
  4. Options generation – parties to place possible solutions on the table

At the end of the process a signed document, detailing main points of agreement will be presented to both parties.

How Long Will It Take?

On average couples will attend therapy for between 4-10 sessions, depending on circumstances

The duration will essentially depend on the parties and how long it takes to go through Mark’s 4-step process and how many issues there are to discuss? It is strongly recommended that once the process is initiated, that a commitment is made by both parties to see the relationship counselling process through to completion.

How Much Will It Cost?

Sessions cost $180 and are held on Saturday mornings.  Medicare and Private Health Rebates are available.

Duration of sessions is 60-90 minutes. Please note, there is also the option of intensive half day sessions. They are charged at $500.
