Do you or someone you know suffer from depression?

What is depression and how does it effect our lives?

Depression is a general sense of despondency or unhappiness with life, that is sustained in the medium-long term (i.e. 6 months)

Depression along with anxiety is the most common form of mental illness that people will suffer from.  The good news is that there is help out there for you.

This year alone many people in Brisbane will be affected by some form of depression.

It is natural to have changes in your mood throughout the day.  However, it is when your downs became more frequent than your ups and last longer, then you may want to consult your counsellor to get some help to deal with it.

There are many different options for people when it comes to dealing with depression.  For example:

  • Psychotherapy – Counselling with your GP, Psychologist, Psychiatrist etc
  • Pharmaceutical support – Anti-Depressants medication.
  • Combination of both – Psychotherapy + Medication

Initially your GP may recommend that you take anti-depressants to combat your symptoms.  While for others, you may feel comfortable talking with a Psychotherapist about your depressive symptoms.

Common Psychology approaches

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Solution Focused Therapy

CBT, ACT and Solution Focused Therapy help you to cope with negative thoughts and emotions through utilising a number of different techniques….

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Challenging faulty beliefs and thoughts
  • Goal-setting
  • Talk therapy
  • Mindfulness exercises

All approaches have strong empirical justification and have been shown to alleviate depressive symptoms.

Everyone is different and how you experience depression will be different as well.  A personally tailored approach to alleviating your depressive symptoms will be provided to you based on the principles of ACT and CBT therapy.

How many sessions will it take?

On average clients wanting help with depression in Brisbane will come to therapy for between 6-12 sessions.

How much will it cost?

Different rebates are provided including, Medicare, Private Health, Brisbane Mind, Department of Veterans Affairs etc.

The cost of sessions is $130.  If you have a valid Medicare referral through your GP this will equate to $50 in out of pocket expenses.  In other words you will receive $83.40 back as a Medicare rebate.  You can claim the rebate at the Psychologist’s consulting rooms after your consultation.

If you have Extras cover through your Private Health Fund you will be entitled to approximately 50% (i.e. $65) of the cost of the session back.  Please check with your provider to make sure that you are covered.
